  • Job Summary

    The Financial Specialist serves as a critical member of the Center for Cancer Care team by providing patients with direction and support regarding the financial impact of their treatment. This person will accompany the Nurse Navigator in patients’ Navigation Appointment to provide patients with an expectation of potential out-of-pocket costs and available financial assistance. The Specialist will also serve as a liaison between patients and various assistance programs whether internal to Canton-Potsdam Hospital or external (e.g. pharmaceutical companies and foundations). The Financial Specialist will also manage the completion and submission of forms such as Medicaid visit allowances, disability applications, and other related forms. This person will also play a leadership role in internal continuous improvement initiatives around financial performance and coding accuracy. As needed, the Specialist may also be called upon at times to assist with obtaining prior authorization. This person works in both the Medical and Radiation Oncology departments.

    Core Responsibilities

     Patient Financial Counseling

              o   Explaining co-pay, deductibles, explanation of benefits, advanced beneficiary notices

              o   Assessing financial needs of both new and established cancer patients.

              o   Communicating with patients regarding possible assistance and potential out of pocket costs as a result of treatment.

     

    Coordination of Financial Assistance for Patients

             o    Partnering with Patient Financial Services to ensure coverage through Charity Care when                                                   applicable.

             o    Working with pharmaceutical companies to provide affordable medication for eligible patients

             o    Researching and collaborating with outside resources and insurance companies for possible financial/co-pay assistance for patients according to their needs.

             o    Assisting in arranging and finding financial support for supportive services for patients.

     

    Internal Financial Services Support

            o    Partner with Revenue Cycle to provide medical records and other supportive documentation

             o    Reviewing daily charge entry and interface reconciliation

             o    Leading continuous improvement initiatives within the Oncology Service Line around financial metrics and coding accuracy

             o    Obtaining authorizations as needed for medical and radiation oncology programs

     

    Managing Supportive Documentation for Patients

             o    Helping patients complete and submit disability paperwork

             o    Complete forms and letters to insurance for visit coverage
