  • Job Summary

    Within the scope of practice as a Registered Nurse, and in accordance with federal and state laws and regulations and accreditation requirements, the registered nurse provides nursing assessment, care planning and direct delivery of treatment utilizing professional nursing care processes in accordance with licensure and regulatory scope and standards, and established hospital policies, procedures and protocols. Provides professional nursing care to all patients during the “Perioperative phase” and supervises associated personnel in these and related activities. Focus is to maintain a safe and aseptic environment before, during and immediately after surgical intervention. Adhere to the professional standards of the Association of Operating Room Nurses, the New York State Education Department and ensures that quality nursing care is delivered in accordance with the standards of the Nursing Department and the larger hospital.

    Core Responsibilities

         1. Performs a comprehensive patient assessment to identify patient needs.


         2. Develops and implements a comprehensive, individualized plan of care.


    1. implements the plan of care utilizing the following interventions:

    - Protect the patient from injury caused by chemical, laser, positioning, thermal sources and       extraneous objects.

    - Perform count procedures in accordance with policy to protect patient from retained foreign objects.

    - Perform interventions to assure correct patient, correct site, side and level.

    - Manage the patient’s specimens appropriately.

     -Administer medications appropriately

    - Perform interventions to protect the patient from infection.

    - Perform interventions to maintain the patients normothermia throughout the perioperative period.

    - Perform interventions to maintain the patients base-line physical status

    - Provide culturally competent, age-appropriate, ethical care within scope of practice.

    - Protect the patient’s rights and dignity.
